Planning for Interstate Move Out

133

Moving interstate? If you intend to move to a new location, take the time to plan. It is not as easy as you may think. You need careful planning for a big task like this. To help you, we have compiled some useful tips.

Find a Removalist Company

There are many removalist companies. Search online to check out one that may be located near you. Read reviews about the company. Make sure you find a reputable company that has a lengthy experience in this business.

Get quotations from the companies you have pre-selected. Compare the inclusions and costs. While cost may be important, be careful not to choose only based on the lowest price. Be sure to factor in other considerations like company reputation and experience. Also, make sure there are no hidden costs. Some companies bid and give a very low price. After they win in the bid, they will show other costs to be incurred.Ā  Donā€™t fall into this trap.

After selecting your removalist, book them in advance. Who knows you might get discounts for booking in advance! Sometimes rush bookings incur a higher price.

Make a Thorough Inventory List

To ensure you donā€™t forget anything and you do not lose important items, make a checklist. Do this as thoroughly as possible. This takes a lot of time, most especially if you have a lot of things accumulated over the years.

Notify your Property Manager

This depends on your location. If you live in a condo, rented house, or subdivision, you need to seek permission from the property manager. Notify him/her of your move-out date and fill up the necessary forms. Get permits.

This step does not only apply to your current property manager. Contact your future property manager. You will also need to secure forms and other permits for moving-in on a specified date.

Sometimes, tenants become so busy that they forget to get the necessary permits until the day of move-out. So do this as early as possible to avoid any hassle.

Purchase Packing Materials

Buy lots and lots of boxes and packaging tapes! Donā€™t forget to purchase ties like straws to tie your things. Get pentel pens or big markers to properly label your boxes.

Dispose Unnecessary Items

Donā€™t bring useless items anymore to your new place. At least one month before your planned move-out, take the time to sort out your stuff. Sell if you can to get some extra cash. Throw things you donā€™t need.Ā  Some items you can still give away to friends, relatives, or charities.Ā  Doing so will only leave you with the necessary items to bring along.

Organize Your Items

Before you pack, it is a great idea to organize them well. Put similar items together. Sort them according to how you want to pack them. It can be through functionality.Ā  For example, segregate decorations, kitchen items, books, and toys.Ā  Sometimes in our busy lives, we find that items are spread across the house. So put similar items back together before you pack. This will make unpacking much easier.

You can also sort by area. Group the items according to rooms. An example is to separate items from your master bedroom with your other rooms.

Pack the Items Well

Put the items you have segregated and organized in your boxes. Make sure you pack them well. Maximize boxes so you donā€™t have too many boxes.

For fragile ones like your dishware, they should be wrapped with paper. It will be good to put a cushion inside the box to ensure they remain safe. Don’t forget to label the box with a big “FRAGILE” marking.

Properly label all boxes. Tip for easier unpacking is to have big labels with legible handwriting!Ā  This way, you can easily find the boxes you have to unpack first when you arrive in your new home.

Keep personal belongings with you

Separate the valuable items and other personal belongings.Ā  Examples are jewelry and cash. This may also include important and confidential documents. It will be better if you keep them with you. So if you are driving by car, just bring them along with you.

Checklist on the Day of Moving Out

  • Turn off all lights. Switch off the main power.
  • Close the water valve.
  • Check if there are no hazardous materials left over.
  • Monitor that all boxes are securely and safely placed in the truck.
  • Lock the doors. Secure the place. Turn over keys properly to the person-in-charge.
  • Walk around the whole property at least twice to make sure nothing is left behind.
  • Have food and water inside your car or your bag. Moving out is very tiring. Always be well-hydrated.
  • Have a presence of mind to ensure you donā€™t miss out on anything.
  • If you have smaller kids, brief them on what to do on this date. Assign someone to look over them while you supervise the move-out.
  • If you need to disconnect utilities, call the companies right after you move-out
  • If you didn’t hire a professional cleaning company, have a bit of time to do some sweeping and cleaning. It will always be nice to leave things in order and good condition.
