9 Things to Stop Doing if You Really Want to Get Organized This Season

106

Let’s start with the obvious. Spring is a time for cleaning, and it has been for decades, if not longer.  It’s a time when we can go a bit deeper with the soap, sponges, cleaners, and brushes and really get into the corners and higher areas that are often neglected. This naturally leads to getting rid of papers that have been sitting on the counter for months, cleaning out drawers and closets that are filled with items we no longer use, and finally putting away things that have been off to the side for ages.

Reasons why spring cleaning is essential and important

Mentally, spring cleaning is about starting fresh and new. Take a moment to create a calm and healthy living space that you can enjoy, thrive, and relax.  When a space is organized and clean, we can recharge and have a positive attitude.

Here are some additional reasons why it’s important to scrub, organize, and repeat:

  • It promotes healthy habits: A clean home is a healthy home. Dust, dirt, and other allergens can accumulate over time. This can possibly make it harder to breathe for those with allergies and related respiratory problems.
  • We cannot stress this enough! A clean space helps to destress. Clutter can be stressful and overwhelming. An organized space can be calming, predictable, and therefore feel safe.
  • Save time and possibly cents. A cluttered space makes it nearly impossible to find things, particularly if you are running late. It can also lead to wasted money as you need to rebuy things that you cannot find.
  • It creates a sense of accomplishment: There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a clean, organized home. All of that hard work will pay off and be enjoyed for months to come.

Procrastination and feeling overwhelmed are just two of the reasons why people don’t get to their spring cleaning. It’s also a lack of time.  There are also mental and other barriers.

Here’s a list of things that you just shouldn’t do if you really want to get your space in tip-top shape.

  1. Don’t think about cleaning the entire house or multiple spaces at once. Set reasonable goals and reward yourself when complete.
  2. Guilt is not helpful and slows you down. It’s time to stop feeling guilty about the mess and disorganization. Positive thinking is a must!
  3. Buying cheap quality furniture or items that are disposable after a few years is a big no-no. Invest in high-end furniture that was built to last. For example, Realcozy tv stands have loads of options with storage, are handcrafted in their Arizona facility, and can even be considered an heirloom piece.
  4. Get over the negative self-talk and get into the habit of positive thinking. You’ll see how much more you’re able to accomplish.
  5. It’s not necessary to buy loads of products to help get organized. It’s amazing what you can use to get organized that’s already in your home. Shoeboxes with new labels can be repurposed in closets and gift boxes can be used to organize drawers.
  6. Stop thinking that everything has sentimental value. We’re suckers for good memories and items from people that we love. But it doesn’t have to be every single item.
  7. Shoving things into a closet, the garage or the basement is not cleaning up. It’s just moving stuff to another spot. If you’re going to take the time to organize, do it right
  8. If you’ve decided to donate items, don’t wait. Just do it. Call up several local organizations and see which one is able to come first.
  9. Be open to getting help. You don’t have to go at it alone.
