Adding “Green” to your Interior

Another way to add a splash of green to almost any room is with plants. They can breathe oxygen into your home as their texture adds depth to your room’s design.

Using Warm Tone Elements

Staying in the environmentally friendly aspect of design, homes are looking to nature for an authentic style in types of rooms. From wood in the bedroom, stone in the grand room, and minerals in the kitchen, there is a part of nature that you can use as a complement to all your existing furnishings, or to enhance the new fixtures and furniture. Paints in main rooms have also shifted to a combination of beige and gray – a perfect background to those lovely green accents.

Giving Floors a Voice

Floors and ceilings are becoming more dramatic with use in patterns and textures – especially in entranceways. While you may not find geometric designs in every house, you may find bold colors or random patterns hidden in wild textures. Some of the mesmerizing designs imitate grand pieces of artwork right out of a great art gallery while others appear to have been taken from the amazing outdoors. You may also find walls covered in whimsical paintings or murals of a favorite ocean-side seascape.

Providing for Modern Lighting

Vintage bare bulbs have been replaced with modern lighting fixtures that often look like they would fit into the set of a science fiction movie. With the use of toned or daylight lamps, the fixtures are sculptures unto themselves and can quickly become a focal point of any rooms.

Providing A New Kitchen

Kitchen storage has slowly been evolving over the past few decades as more open or glass-enclosed shelves have been included in cabinetry spaces. The open areas may include wood, glass, metal, and industrial shelving, and some kitchens have done away with many upper cabinets and have walls of windows instead. Along with the open shelving, more painted cabinets will be shining in modern kitchens and chef’s pantry areas in a large array of timeless colors. To accent the painted cabinets, gunmetal and pewter pulls are replacing the old brass or gold fixtures.

No matter which room of your home you want to redecorate or update, the earthy hues and warm tones can benefit the area. Adding a splash of green or a dramatic floor can also add charm to any room. Why not choose some custom colors for kitchen shelving and see what a change it can make to your living space!

Transforming Spaces With Epoxy Floor Coatings

Epoxy coating for floors is becoming more popular for residential and industrial use as it is extremely strong and durable and comes in a variety of types and colors to suit any application. It is a unique and fun way to add a completely different look to any space or as a practical way of sealing flooring for industrial use with many years of durability. With Epoxy Floor Coatings you can completely transform a floor that will last for many years with very little maintenance. Epoxy has the ability to bond with concrete, providing a resistant, 100% non-volatile surface that will protect the floor from abrasions and stains and withstand heavy wear and tear for anything from five to ten years.

Benefits of Epoxy Floor Coatings by  Epoxy Floor Coatings

Saving Costs

Floor resurfacing can transform virtually any type of concrete or other flooring surfaces. Quality epoxy products allow floors to be resurfaced in hours compared to days, weeks or months needed to replace and cure new flooring. By avoiding the high cost of replacing existing substructures, a lot of time and money can be saved.

Safety

A slip-resistant coating can provide a safer environment in any situation and cover cracks that could cause injury. A slip-resistant epoxy option is ideal for hospitals, industrial buildings, doctor’s offices, or anywhere where workers are exposed to slip and fall risks.

Aesthetics

An epoxy coating will cover dirty and unappealing flooring by hiding stains and worn surfaces where aggregate is showing. Different types of epoxy systems can create a variety of decorative surfaces that are not only beautiful but can be used to enhance the image of any business environment, for example by incorporating a company logo or other decorative touches into the flooring. With epoxy coatings, nearly unlimited combinations of colors and designs can be created to suit any type of application.

Durability

Low Maintenance

Easy Installation

Because there is no digging up of the existing substrate, this type of flooring is incredibly easy to install. It can simply be poured on top of existing flooring with little time to cure before use.

Excellent ROI

Any type of renovation is beneficial to the resale value of a property. An epoxy overlay for flooring is a worthwhile investment that will be taken into account when it comes to the resale of any kind of property, whether residential or commercial.

Different Types of epoxy flooring include:

  • Self-leveling Systems that create a smooth surface with no seams
  • Mortar Coatings for use in high industry as it is the strongest of all coatings with the added benefit of filling in cracks before laying down the flooring.
  • Epoxy Terrazzo systems that are very decorative and suitable for large spaces.
  • Anti-static Flooring systems for use in hospitals, laboratories or electronic manufacturing facilities.
  • Graveled Expoxy systems with highly decorative designs that can be used on business floors for example to place a brand logo.

Epoxy coating is one of the most durable and flexible types of floor resurfacing options available for residential and industrial use. It comes in a variety of types and colors and Epoxy Floor Coatings can help any home or business have better looking and safer flooring with unique and customized epoxy coatings. Although epoxy coatings can be installed by using DIY epoxy coating kits, the quality of the ingredients are much lower than those found in professional-grade products and if the mixture is not prepared correctly the cementitious overlay will not bond properly. Professionals have the necessary experience and tools required to prepare and apply epoxy coatings correctly with guaranteed results.

6 Horrifying Cleaning Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Home

Regular cleaning will make your home a healthier and more attractive place to live in. Plus, if you do the cleaning yourself, you become better and more efficient at doing the job.

However, there are some hard lessons in cleaning that we may encounter along the way if we’re not careful enough.

Which is why below are some horrifying cleaning mistakes that you wouldn’t want to encounter or commit when you’re cleaning your home. Check them out so that you avoid committing these same mistakes when you’re only trying to make your home a better place for you and your other house members.

Using acids on granite and marble countertops

It is commendable for homeowners to try their hand at homemade cleaning solutions because not only will it help them save money, but it will also be a more sustainable choice for your home and for our environment. With that said, one of the most common ingredients for homemade cleaning solutions are acids like citrus juice, white vinegar, and sometimes, soft drinks.

However, if you use any of these (including wine and tomatoes) to clean your granite or marble countertops, then you are likely to damage them. You might end up not only staining your countertops but also even scratch its surface.

Worst case scenario, you’re going to have to repolish your countertops again to get it fixed. Sealants are also a possible choice but they aren’t a guarantee, as choosing the wrong sealant can end up further damaging the countertops if you’re not careful.

Wiping off dust with paper towels

Paper towels are used to clean up a lot of our messes so you might think, by instinct, that paper towels are also fine if you use them to wipe any mirror or glass surface, right? Well, although your instincts are usually right, in this particular case, using paper towels aren’t the best solution.

According to Maid Sailors, leading NY Maids service provider, using paper towels for wiping away dust or prints on mirrors or glass surfaces will cause streaks so you’re not only not removing the stain, you’re spreading it all over the surface.

Aside from that, paper towels tend to leave lint on the surface. So, not only are you spreading the stain, you may also end up adding to it.

In that case, you can opt to use a microfiber cloth instead so that no streaking or extra lint will hinder your mirror from being shiny and clean again.

Ignoring and not cleaning the grout

Although cleaning grout isn’t the most enjoyable of tasks on a good day, there are consequences to ignoring and skipping the cleaning.

One reason ignoring grout for a later date is bad is because of its porous nature. This makes it easier for all sorts of germs and bacteria to enter the grout.

Aside from that, grout can cause discoloration (again, due to its porous nature) if left to its own devices. Also, it can start smelling if left on its own.

All these reasons are enough to start cleaning away at the grout plaguing your bathroom or your kitchen.

For a healthier and cleaner home, it’s best that you address your grout issues as soon as you see them.

Using the wrong cleaning products

Although homemade cleaning products are a step in the right direction, using it the wrong way or simply using the wrong one can lead to more harm than good.

Beforehand, it was mentioned that using too much vinegar or citric acid can damage certain surfaces, but that’s not all. Using too much of them can cause damage to other materials if you’re not careful.

Avoid using too much of these products. Build on them instead of pouring them all over your problem areas. Make sure that you accurately measure your portions when concocting your cleaning product to avoid dealing with this type of problem.

Using too much cleaning products

Even if you’re not using homemade products, your standard cleaning product can still cause problems for you.

Some cleaning products (a lot of them, actually) use very strong chemicals which gets the job done, but can be harmful to your home.

Make sure that you’re careful, again, with your portions. Cleaning products are buildable so you don’t have to go all out when using them.

Cleaning your windows on a sunny day

People who don’t frequently clean their windows don’t know that there’s a specific time of the day when it’s best to clean your windows.

You might be under the wrong impression that a sunny day is best for cleaning windows. Instead, it’s best that windows are cleaned during overcast skies or during the late afternoon or even during evenings. Otherwise, your window might get streaks.

There are some lessons in life that you can learn even without having to go through extreme pain and hardship. Which is why reading this list should be able to help you avoid making the cleaning mistakes that are detrimental to some items in your home. After all, nobody should be punished for trying to improve and better the overall state of their home.

6 Things That Are Damaging Your Asphalt Driveway

Driveways are an essential part of any home because they add beauty and functionality to any real estate property. A fully functioning and well-maintained driveway also adds value to a house or an establishment because it meant that the buyer would no longer spend money to have it repaired. Moreover, it also sets people’s expectations of the property; it’s like having your first impression of a person.

Hence, driveways are worth the investment you put into them because aside from it being the first area of your home that welcomes guests, driveways are always used multiple times in a day. However, if you are looking to extend your driveway’s lifespan, you should also be aware of the factors that can easily deteriorate it.

Water

Rainwater is one of the primary factors that can damage an asphalt driveway. Rainwater that pools around a certain area of your driveway can seep through the asphalt and eventually speed up corrosion washing away the granular base of your driveway. When this happens, cracks begin to develop.

So although asphalt is a durable and flexible material, constant exposure to accumulated rainwater can still damage your driveway. The key to prevent this is to check the surface first and identify which areas could potentially be a catch basin for rainwater so you can address the issue right before paving your driveway.

Snow

Similar to rainwater, melted snow will seep through the small cracks in the asphalt once it thaws and then freezes again during winter months causing the gravel and sand underneath to erode and swell. Apart from that, there are also corrosive materials that we use during the winter season that are harming our driveways such as rock salt.

As much as rock salt is efficient in melting away the snow, it’s corrosive nature can actually hasten the freeze and thaw cycle which expands the cracks in your driveway. An alternative to using rock salt for snow clearing is sand which is an abrasive material that increases friction to make your driveway slip-resistant.

Tree Roots

There is no doubt that plants and trees add aesthetic appeal to any home. However, if you are planning to landscape your property, make sure that you have decent space between your trees and your driveway as the roots can eventually protrude and damage the asphalt. Make sure to have everything properly planned out to prevent this from happening. Another option is to use root barriers.

Oxidation from UV Rays

Asphalt oxidation is a natural and inevitable chemical reaction that happens once the asphalt is exposed to oxygen. However, during warmer seasons, the sun’s UV rays accelerate the oxidation process thereby taking years off your driveway’s lifespan. Oxidation itself cannot be avoided but it the rate it occurs can be reduced through having a regular driveway sealcoating

Consistently Parking on the Same Spot

Repeatedly parking on the same spot can deform an already softened asphalt. As mentioned previously, heat softens the asphalt which in turn loses its shape when subjected to constant force and a tremendous amount of weight from cars and heavy load vehicles.

Poor Installation

A badly paved asphalt driveway will show early signs of deterioration. If you noticed cracks or potholes on the first or second year after installation, it may be because your paving contractor used substandard materials or the technicians who paved your driveway were poorly trained. Nonetheless, this should not be an issue if you have done your research and vetted the contractors before hiring them. Tips to Make the Most Out of Renting Your Home or Apartment

The rental business is booming these days. Because of the vacation rental property management company, and other technological advances, you can make good money from putting your home out there for travelers, business people, or vacationers to look at quickly and book.

Right now, there are over 6 million Airbnb listings worldwide in over 191 different countries.

If you have a home or apartment that you are able to rent out for a few weeks a year or a few nights here and there, you could make a nice bit of passive income for yourself. And it’s not only Airbnb that allows you to rent your place out.

Companies like this downtown San Diego real estate company also help their clients rent out their properties.

Here a few tips to make the most money out of renting your apartment or home this year:

Do as much as you can

I’ve seen it happen many times. Someone will begin renting out their home, but will hire a professional cleaner and landscaper to come in every week to clean up the property. But this just cuts into your profits.

If you can, try to do these things yourself. I know you’re busy, but you won’t believe the money you’ll save if you avoid paying someone to do tasks you can easily do yourself.

If you must, hire a lawn care business that is affordable, and a house cleaner that won’t be in your house for 6 hours. That stuff adds up.

List it everywhere

You will probably get most of your listings through Airbnb, but don’t completely rely on it. Look at listing your place on other services, like this apartment locating platform. And you should definitely look into Flipkey and TurnKey.

If you’re really serious about renting, you should create your very own website and start sharing it with your friends and on social media. You never know who will see it and who will choose apartments for rent in Chicago.

Last but not least, throw an ad up on Kijiji and Craigslist.

Keep up with trends

When people book somewhere to spend vacation, they like to feel civilized, modern, and fancy. So if you want to get recommended by visitors and have your guests talk about how much they loved staying at your place, keep up with the trends.

Look through home magazines, home decoration website like RooHome and follow trendy home decor influencers to make sure your place will please your visitors.

Take some great pictures

After you have your place looking like it belongs in the next issue of Chatelaine, you have to put some real thought into the photos you’ll be posting.

For your Airbnb listing, your website, and any social media posting you do for your rental property, pictures will be all some people have to go on to decide if they want to rent.

I would recommend hiring a professional photographer because this is a very important part of renting out your property. If you have a friend who is a photographer, or are crafty enough to take excellent photos yourself, that’s even better.

But make sure you don’t go ahead and post poor quality photos. Do it right and you’ll see the results start coming in almost immediately.

Happy renting!

How to Design Luxury Bathroom with Shower Head

Designing a new bathroom is not something that is undertaken every day. Along with designing a new kitchen, it is a project you may undertake rarely. Therefore, it requires a good deal of thought and research to obtain a pleasing result. In the 21st. Century more and more people are utilizing the convenience of a shower over a traditional bathtub. For those with an eye towards ecology, taking a shower uses far less water than filling a tub.

Be Practical

Planning luxury bathrooms may be fun but in practical terms, it is essential to work out a budget for the project and stick to it. Free bathroom design software is widely available and can assist greatly when planning a bathroom layout by allowing the various elements to be positioned using ‘drag and drop’. Conversely, a piece of graph paper and a pencil can also be used.

Utilize Available Space

When contemplating installing a new shower, the options will be highly dependent upon the shape of the room, the amount of space available and, of course, the size of the budget. Available space for the new bathroom layout will be the crucial factor regarding what is and is not possible. In the UK, the average bathroom size equates to around the size of a King-size bed.

Cost-Effective Showers

Due to the convenience and cost-effectiveness of taking a shower, rather than running a bath, many people who are faced with a small bathroom interior have ‘done away’ with their traditional bathtub in favor of an enclosed shower cubicle. For a household that may include elderly or infirm members, a fold-down seat makes a useful and convenient design feature. A rail shower head with a hand-held option is also useful when the household has very young family members.

Size Matters

Even after eschewing the services of a traditional tub, the bathroom layout may be such that space is still an issue when designing the installation of a shower enclosure. Specialist bathroom designers consider 3 x 4 feet as an absolute minimum requirement for a shower.

Luxury bathrooms will most certainly include an enclosed shower with a rail shower head that utilizes both overhead and handheld spray heads.

Rainfall Showers

Modern PEX tubing allows luxury bathrooms to be designed to feature the shower head located directly overhead or even fitted flush within the ceiling tiles to provide a ‘rainfall’ effect to be created. These types of shower head may be square or rectangular in shape to easily match with the tiling.

Extraction

Showers create steam and moisture in the air. Therefore, it is very important to install an extraction fan, on an exterior wall, to avoid issues of damp or mold.

Tiling

Tiling is a huge part of creating a new shower area and provides an opportunity to create something aesthetically pleasing as well as practical.

Clear glass shower enclosures are becoming increasingly popular. Although they provide little in the way of privacy, they allow the interior decorative tiling to be seen from outside the shower. This type of enclosure will also aid the illusion of size when installed within a small bathroom interior.

New Bathroom – An Investment

Real estate agents suggest that, after the kitchen, the bathroom can be a major positive selling point for a property. Therefore, spending on a carefully planned bathroom should be considered an investment, both for the present and for when it is time to sell-up and move on to a new property.

Why Cockroaches Live in Cars & How to Get Rid of Them

The thought of cockroaches is enough to make most people shudder. In fact, there are approximately 4,600 species of cockroach but only 30 of them are known to visit human habitats.

One thing is certain, cockroaches can be difficult to eradicate if you have an issue in your home or your vehicle it is advisable to get the assistance of our local exterminators.

Don’t forget that these small bugs will leave waste on your food and even vomit on it. I this way they can spread the bacteria they are carrying, bacteria which can cause health issues like salmonella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Why Cockroaches Live In Cars

You may think that cockroaches only live in cars that have been abandoned and unused for weeks, months, or even years. However, this is not always the case, a cockroach can find a car that you use daily to be an attractive option. Here’s why.

A car is not very different from your home, it offers a lot of potential hiding places for a cockroach. This gives them somewhere to lay eggs. In addition, there is a good chance you eat and drink in your vehicle, providing the cockroach with the food and water it needs to survive.

The problem is that your car is a fairly enclosed space, cockroaches can quickly multiple, creating a potentially toxic atmosphere thanks to the bacteria they carry.

Getting Rid Of Them

The first step is to vacuum your vehicle as thoroughly as possible. This won’t eliminate the cockroaches but it may help you to discover where they are hiding. Of course, there are so many potential hiding places you may still not notice where they are.

You can take your vehicle to a reliable garage to have your car checked over or even pulled apart inside. This is one way you can ensure the cockroaches are dealt with and your car will end up looking and feeling like new, at least on the inside. Click here to find out more about this option.

Bait

Once you’ve fully cleaned the car or got the garage to do it for you, you need to consider adding some bait. It’s best to purchase roach bait as this is attractive to the cockroaches and will kill them effectively.

Place the belt in confined spaces, such as under the seats, or in the corner of your trunk. In effect, you’re giving them an easy supply of food and water, but it will kill them and any nest they have.

It’s important to remain vigilant, you should check regularly that the bait is being eaten and top it up if so. You’ll soon know when the cockroaches have been beaten, the amount of bait remaining will stay the same.

Cockroaches are not something you want to find in your vehicle. But, if you do, make sure you take positive action to control the issue, the longer you leave it the harder it is to deal with.
