5 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Carpet

Carpets can age over time. They also tend to be a hotspot for dirt and germs to build up. We understand that our lives can be extremely busy, so who has time to think about what their carpets look like? Luckily all it takes is a little bit of time and TLC and you can get your carpets back to their original condition.

Carpets can be extremely high maintenance

Carpets can sometimes take a lot of looking after, especially if you’re prone to spilling a lot of liquid on your floors. So, make sure that you’re doing everything to keep your carpet like it was when you first got it.

1. Vacuum your carpets on a regular basis

This step sounds obvious, but by vacuuming your floors on the regular, you’re actually already maintaining it properly and therefore lengthening its life. Get into the habit of vacuuming at least once a week or so. This way, any dust, germs or bacteria that was sitting in your carpet will be removed. The build-up of this debris in your carpets can make them look old and dull. Investing in a good vacuum cleaner is an easy way to maintain your carpets over time.

2. Make sure to remove your shoes before entering your home

The majority of the dirt that gets into your carpet is brought in by the dirt on the bottom of any shoes that are walked into the house. It’s also not very hygienic, you walk outside and then you walk the same germs into your own home. To make carpet maintenance easy in the long term, create a rule to leave all shoes at the door, in the hallway or on a doormat, before coming into the house.

3. Mats and rugs can help extend the life of your floors

The best way to avoid your carpets getting overly dirty – put a rug over them. A nice rug that goes with your room’s interior will prevent any dirt from being trodden through the room and directly onto the carpet. The rug may get dirty over time, but rugs can be washed or replaced, carpets can’t as easily. Doormats can also make a great addition to your home, as this again stops dirt from shoes being walked through your home.

4. Tackle any stains immediately

There is nothing worse than spilling a glass of red wine on your new cream carpet – it can send you into a panic. So long as these stains are treated right away, your carpet shouldn’t come out looking too damaged. Letting stains sit on your carpet will cause the stain to travel deeper into the fibres of your carpet, and will be a lot harder to remove. If you do drop something on your sparkling cream carpet, use a quality carpet stain remover and blot the area, don’t wipe it.

Sometimes you don’t always need a fancy carpet stain remover to get rid of a stain. The plain old combination of dish soap and water sometimes works just as well.

5. Use a carpet protectant

A lot of carpet protectants work by forming a barrier over the carpet, which means that the carpet will soil slower. There are so many benefits of using carpet protectants as a precaution. A carpet protectant will make your floors much easier to clean, and it can prevent both water-based and oil-based liquids from causing too much of a stain, making them easier to remove. If you have just applied a carpet protectant, where possible, it is ideal that you leave the area for two days to make sure the carpet protectant can fully soak in without being disturbed.
