A desk finish affects more than the room’s appearance. It is the surface under a keyboard, the edge touched throughout the day, and the area where a scratch or spill will first be noticed. Compare a physical sample alongside the written specification.
Find out what the surface actually is
Ask the supplier to identify the core, facing, edge material, and coating. Terms such as wood finish or stone effect describe appearance, not construction. Request a separate description for the top and the supporting cabinet; they may use different materials.
| Surface choice | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Timber or veneer | What is the coating, and what can be repaired or refinished? |
| Laminate or melamine-faced board | How are edges joined, and which cleaning products are permitted? |
| Painted surface | Is a touch-up system available, and how is color matched? |
| Glass or stone | What are the weight, edge, support, and delivery requirements? |
Do not test a showroom sample with water, heat, or chemicals without permission. Ask for documented care and performance information instead of relying on an informal demonstration.
View the sample at the desk location
Put it beside the floor, doors, and existing storage. Examine it under daylight and the room’s lighting. Check reflections from a seated position, particularly where a glossy top may sit between a window and a screen.
Compare the edge as closely as the broad surface. Feel its shape, inspect visible seams, and ask how it will meet cable openings and returns. A finish that looks convincing in a small swatch may appear different across a large uninterrupted top.
Specify the whole combination
Record the finish code, grain or pattern direction, edge detail, base color, and hardware. Ask whether separate production batches may vary, especially if additional storage will be ordered later.
Keep the approved sample or a clearly identified reference with the purchase record. Check the delivered desk against it before discarding packaging. For the functional comparison that should precede the finish choice, see our traditional and modern desk guide.
