There are several precautions you need to take when installing insulation. While modern home insulation is far safer than methods used in the past, you still need to be careful. It’s not even all about the materials you’re suing though. The average household is full of dangers if you don’t take the right precautions.
So, if you’re about to embark on a DIY insulation project, here’s a few things you need to consider.
Why do you need to be careful with insulation?
Put simply, you need to be careful with insulation because it can be dangerous to install. Many people think it’s a nice easy job they can do themselves, and it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s free of risk. Firstly, the insulation materials themselves are made of tiny fibres which can be inhaled or cause skin irritation. But secondly, consider the space you’re working in.
In the roof cavity, for example, it’s a small, enclosed space that gets extremely dusty. It also gets really hot if you’re working in summer or the middle of the day. For both of those reasons you need to be very cautious. You’ll also likely run into a lot of wiring, especially when installing your wall insulation. It’s probably a good idea to turn to power off before you start. But if that’s not possible, be extremely careful about exposed live wires. Even defective fittings, cables or terminals can cause burns or electric shocks. If you’re at all uncertain, contact an electrician first.
High-quality gloves
You’ll want some high-quality protective gear when installing insulation, and gloves should be at the top of your list. As we mentioned, modern insulation is a lot safer to handle than older styles. However, you should still wear protective gloves when handling any insulation products. Also, you may find you need to remove existing insulation, and in older homes, those materials could be very degraded and unsafe.
So, a thick pair of gloves, like gardening gloves, are a great option to protect your hands at all times.
Face mask and eyewear
The same goes for protecting your face. In fact, it might be even more important. Insulation is made of tiny fibres, and these can be inhaled. It goes without saying, you also don’t want them in your eyes. So, it’s time to get the goggles and face mask out.
While most people have become accustomed to wearing face masks in recent times, you might need something a little more effective for installing insulation. A P2 dust mask protects you against fibres, but also any other dust that’s in your work area. Always look for fog-resistant goggles too, because it will make your life a whole lot easier while crawling around in the roof.
Protective clothing
Finally, it’s not essential, but you can buy disposable full-body protection from the local hardware store. Some people prefer to just cover everything up and be done with it. If you’re not a fan of that, however, make sure you wear a long sleeve top and make sure there’s very little exposed skin while working.
