How To Light Your Kitchen for Functionality and Design

Kitchens are truly the heart of the home; they serve as multipurpose hubs where families gather to do everything from prepare meals to work on homework or simply share in each other’s company. Therefore, while lighting is an integral part of any home’s design, it’s especially important in the kitchen due to the variety of tasks that take place there. In addition to increasing the functionality of your kitchen, the right lighting can also improve its ambiance.

Wondering where to start when it comes to lighting your kitchen for both form and function? Here’s a closer look at key considerations aimed at helping you devise the perfect kitchen lighting plan for your home:

1. Use Layered Lighting

The most effective and balanced home lighting plans are layered. This means that they incorporate a mix of the three basic types of lighting: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. In kitchens, layered lighting is especially important because no single lighting source is sufficient for the breadth and depth of tasks that take place there.

Decorative chandeliers are a popular choice for ambient lighting, but there are other options, too. For a different look, consider hanging three identical pendant lights at your kitchen’s center or over the island. Like chandeliers, pendant lights are available in a wide selection of styles and can improve the look, feel, and functionality of your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to go big and bold with your choice of kitchen light centerpiece. Think of it as an opportunity to show off your style and make a statement.

Keep in mind that, when it comes to hanging lights, it’s not just about the fixtures themselves but also how you hang them. According to Forbes, there should be between 30 and 32 inches of space between a hanging fixture’s lowest point and the kitchen island or counter.

In addition to the main overhead lights, you’ll need “layers” of other light sources. For example, additional illumination is necessary in areas where certain types of work typically take place, such as over food prep stations, above the kitchen sink, and over the stove. Proper lighting can help make certain tasks, such as slicing and dicing, faster, safer, and more precise. A mix of lighting also helps to minimize glare, which increases visibility throughout the space.

Just because kitchens are inherently functional doesn’t mean they can’t also be beautiful. Enter accent lighting – wall sconces, in particular, are an easy way to showcase special features of your kitchen, such as a piece of art or collection. Furthermore, high-end wall sconces can be works of art in and of themselves.

2. Acknowledge Ambiance

When you’re preparing food or helping your child with homework, adequate lighting is everything. However, when it comes time to serve and eat the meal, a different ambiance may be in order. Lighting has powerful potential to set the tone in our living spaces, and one simple way to do so is by using dimmer lights. In addition to a dimmer light for chandelier lighting and other ambient lighting, consider adding separate dimmers for each fixture to achieve a truly customizable lighting plan.

You should also be aware that there is such a thing as too much when it comes to lighting. Bring in too many hanging pieces or fixtures that don’t coordinate well with each other or the rest of your kitchen décor, and you risk a cluttered end-result. If you need more lighting but don’t want to overpower your design with too many pieces, under-cabinet lights and track lighting can add illumination without overwhelming the space.

Choosing the right bulbs is also essential for allowing ample light while establishing ambiance in the kitchen. Higher temperature bulbs emit cooler, bluer light while lower temperature bulbs emit warmer, amber light. According to Bob Vila, bulbs with a color temperature of between 3,500K and 4,100K are best for ambient and task light figures, while bulbs with color temperatures between 2,700K and 3,000K are best for accent light fixtures that will be used to backlight showpieces. Lastly, accent light fixtures with temperatures between 3,500K and 4,100K are ideal for casting sharp white light on details or decor you want to feature in the space.

As mentioned earlier, chandeliers, wall sconces, table lamps, floor lamps, and other lighting options aren’t just utilitarian. Like all of the furniture and fixtures in your home, they’re also an opportunity for self-expression. Selecting lighting that appeals to your sense of style and taste is important. Today’s high-end lighting options are available in many different shapes, styles, and colors. Whether your kitchen is sleek and chic or relaxed and rustic, the right light fixtures can complement and elevate your space.

Worried that different light sources will clash? While they don’t have to match, choosing a consistent finish, color palette, or design style across light fixtures and light fixture accessories can ensure a harmonious outcome.

3. Consider Your Investment

Many homeowners underestimate the value of lighting. However, this is a mistake, as the quantity and quality of light in your space directly impacts your quality of life. Instead of thinking of kitchen lighting as an afterthought, consider it an investment in comfort, convenience, and beauty. To that end, while setting a budget is important with any design project, make sure to prioritize ample and unique lighting. High-end lighting may have a higher price tag, but it will more than pay for itself in the long run in terms of the beauty and illumination it adds to your life.

The takeaway? Whether you’re undertaking a complete kitchen remodelor you’re hoping to make a few small improvements, there’s no better way to transform your space than with lighting. This guide can help you design and bring to life a lighting plan that acknowledges and enhances how you live (and feel) in your home. From there, you can enjoy your well-illuminated kitchen – and the many opportunities it offers for gathering and spending time with loved ones – to its full potential.

Top 8 Health and Environmental Benefits of Using Beeswax Candles in Your Home

Are beeswax candles really as good as they are made out to be? They can be quite expensive, so consumers may question whether they are worth the investment and wonder what benefits they truly hold. Here 8 of the most important environmental and health benefits of beeswax candles.

What are beeswax candles?

The name is pretty self-explanatory, these are candles made from beeswax produced by honeybees.

During the honey making process, bees make the wax to hold the honey. Bees produce 1 pound of wax from an estimated 33 million flowers. The wax is extracted from the honey during processing for honey and other products to be made. The wax is melted down, fragranced, rolled, dipped or set in moulds to make candles.

Beeswax has a high melting point and often a natural fragrance, but due to the high resource and time-consuming process, they can be more expensive. But are they worth the price tag?

The health and environmental benefits of beeswax candles

The natural origins of these candles can be a very attractive feature of this product. But are they really good for the environment and healthy for consumers? The answer is YES, and here are just a few reasons why.

  1. Clean and Purify the air

When beeswax candles burn, the material releases negative ions into the air. These ions bond with positively charged ions and therefore, neutralises the air. The positive ions are usually particles such as pollutants, doors, dusts, pollen and other harmful airborne particles.

Neutralising the air and removing the harmful particles is connected to relieving asthma symptoms and allergic reactions. This can be especially beneficial as often asthma and allergies come hand in hand.

  1. Further Benefits of negative ions

Not only do beeswax candles help pre-existing medical conditions but the negative ions have other health benefits. These include balancing and regulating serotonin levels, reduce stress and helping to regulate mood.

Additionally, these benefits can induce mental clarity, a higher sense of wellbeing and improving sleep. There are even suggestions of lighting a beeswax candle 60-30 minutes before bed to benefit from the positive effects and sleep better.

  1. Lower release of pollutants

Burning a beeswax candle is shown to be very beneficial for your health, especially in comparison to other candles. Synthetic candles made from paraffin or gel release harmful pollutants and toxins into the air.

Acetone, benzene, and toluene are known carcinogens that are linked health and environmental damaging effects. Including cancers in the lung and cardiovascular problems. As well as petro-soot that is similar to fumes released by diesel cars.

Therefore, cleaner burning beeswax candles will be much more beneficial for the environment and your health.

  1. Natural Light emitted

Another comparison between manmade and beeswax candles is the light they emit. Synthetic paraffin wax candles tend to burn weakly due to a lower melting point.

On the other hand, beeswax candles burn much more brightly, emitting light on the same spectrum as the sun. Providing such a bright and ambient light can often contribute to helping Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

  1. Sustainable Materials

Paraffin wax candles are made using the sludge at the bottom of crude oil barrels, and bleached for its white colour. Promoting the use of unsustainable fossil fuels and explaining why so many toxins are released when burned.

Although, more sustainable soy wax candles are also available, they require hydrogenation (a chemical process) in order to be made. Additionally, soy wax may be made from a plant but has damaging environmental and social implications such as deforestation and pesticides.

This is what makes beeswax candles a much more attractive and environmentally friendly option. Beeswax is a natural by-product of honey making and doesn’t require any chemical process or additives to make the candles. The wax is also biodegradable and burns slower than most other candle wax, making it last even longer.

  1. Naturally scented

In addition to the main wax being harmful to health and environment, the scents added can also cause the same effect. Synthetic fragrances release phthalates that can aggravate asthma and allergic reactions when inhaled.

Beeswax candles on the other hand are scented naturally. The scent of beeswax candles can also change with the type of bee and the flowers they visit. Some candles may be also scented by using natural essential oils that do not cause any reaction like synthetics. Therefore, maintaining the health and environmental benefits for beeswax candles.

  1. Natural Wick materials

Another material that can also emit toxins is the wick of a candle. Historically, wicks contained a lead core which released lead particles in to the air causing poisoning. Even though nowadays lead cores are mostly banned, zinc is a common replacement, with synthetic fibres used as wraps.

Most natural candles instead, use cotton or paper wicks with no metal core. Using a sustainable and natural material will not release any harmful particles into the air, thus protecting your health.

  1. Supporting Local beekeepers and businesses

Another great benefit of investing in beeswax candles is that it supports local beekeepers and businesses. As beeswax is a by-product of the honey industry, making beeswax candles can be a great way for local businesses to add to their potential income.

Final Take aways on beeswax candles

Beeswax candles have many benefits for the environment and your health. From cleaning the air and producing negative ions that promote good health. To bright light like the sun and being made from sustainable materials.

However, it is clear that simply purchasing a candle stating it was made with beeswax is not all that is needed to ensure you receive these benefits. You should ensure that the candle you are purchasing is 100% beeswax, unscented (or scented with natural oils) and has either a cotton or paper wick.

In burning your 100% beeswax candle, you can be sure that no harmful substances will be released into the air, as well as knowing you are supporting both the environment and local businesses.

Asphalt Shingles – Why We Think It Is the Best Material

One of the advantages of owning your own home is, you get to decide what it should look like. As fun and exciting as this may be, it can sometimes be daunting especially when faced with an assortment of choices from doors, to windows, to the floor or bathroom tiles. But this doesn’t need to be an issue when it comes to the biggest item of the home – the roof.

This article will lend a helping hand to point you in the right direction of the roof, and which one you should go for, listing all the reasons we think so, so you can focus on the smaller things such as the bathroom tiles, instead. So, let’s jump in and reveal the one type of roof that you should invest in today.

Asphalt.

That’s right. Asphalt Shingles on your new build will make the entire structure look luxurious and appealing. Let’s look at a few good reasons why you should opt for this material as opposed to any other such as ceramic, metal, or wooden shingles.

Top 4 Benefits of Asphalt Shingles and 1 more Surprising One

It Has Aesthetic Appeal. Did we mention how lovely this type of roof can look at a new home? One of the main reasons for this is, because those that make them, can design them into any look you prefer. They can look like wood or cedar, they can also be manufactured to look like slate and in different colors as well. You can get these not only in different colors but in multiple textures too.

Just imagine these tiles manufacture to resemble wood, yet, they aren’t. Neither concrete nor metal can provide you with this advantage. Not only are they renowned for their beauty, but also their durability and long life-span.

Very Easy to Install and Repair. Something, as exposed as a roof, is always vulnerable to different elements such as extreme weather conditions or trees and branches falling on them, or birds dropping debris and dirt on it. This can lead to some wear and tear over time, and luckily, with this option, the repair and installation of old for new are so easy. Which makes it a low maintenance product as well.

Also, if you get yourself one of the professional services that offer the repair and installation of these roofing materials, such as this one here you’re good to go for a lifetime. Any maintenances or replacements that are needed can easily be done by them as they would either have new ones for you or know where to get them.

It Is Affordable. These are possibly some of the most affordable options anyone can invest in on a budget. They are cost-effective and are worth their value seeing as they come in such an array of colors, designs, and looks. In North America, they can last up to 100 years. Making them one of the most hard-wearing materials around.

Long-Life Span and Recyclable Abilities. As mentioned above they can last up to 100 years. With a lifespan as much as this it is no wonder loads of homeowners are opting for this. Also because of their stable compounds, one can be sure of fewer leakage problems with houses. Plus, they are fire and uplift resistant.

At the end of their lifespan, these can be recycled. Services that can take them and do it for you are available in most regions and the material is turned into other useful things such as paving and used in the production processes on various plants.

For the surprising finale, we’ve left the best for last. One more exciting thing we will add to the list is that these are also very energy efficient, which means you may just save on electricity bills come wintertime.

The main reason for this is that when they are being installed the professionals usually lay down a synthetic under mat first on the roof structure, and them the asphalt shingles go on top of them, making the house nice and secure from any wind, water, or air coming in or going out, keeping things nice and cosy inside the house. It will keep the house cool when it’s hot outside and warm when it is cold outside.

Here’s What You Need to Know to Match a Ceiling Fan to Your Decor

Gone are the days of the traditional wood, brass, and rattan ceiling fan your granny had in her parlor. Today’s ceiling fans come in a wide range of design styles to match any decor. As a result, old advice about matching your ceiling fan to your ceiling has gone out the window. Today’s homeowners want to draw attention to their stylish new fans — they want them to stand out.

And if there’s one thing today’s fan designs do well, it’s stand out. These days, you can buy ceiling fan styles to appeal to any fashion sense, whether you’re more of a laid-back, beachy type, or a sleek urban professional, or something in between. When matching a ceiling fan to your decor, you have to look at the colors and styles you already have in your home and choose a fan accordingly.

Coordinate with Your Home’s Colors

Buying a new ceiling fan is a lot like buying a new piece of furniture — but instead, it’ll become a permanent fixture in your home and something that you may even design your home around more in the future. If you want it to fit in for now, though, take a look at the colors already in your home.

Wood and wood-look finishes are popular in ceiling fan designs, so if you have a lot of exposed wood in your home — like a hardwood floor, wood wainscotting, wood trim and molding, or wood furniture — you could choose a ceiling fan made with the same wood or wood color. If a more eclectic approach to decorating has led you to collect pieces in a variety of wood types and colors, coordinate your fan with a dominant wood color and type, especially if it’s one that features structurally in your home, like in the floor, doors, or trim.

Of course, you might prefer the look of a metal or even colored finish. Coordinate the type and color of your fan’s metal finish to match your light switches, doorknobs, and other hardware, or choose a colorful finish that complements your decorating color scheme.

Match or Contrast with Your Home’s Existing Style

If you’re trying to choose between matching your new ceiling fan to your decorating style or to your home, you should match it to your home, so that it looks like a coherent part of the structure. Go ahead and choose that colored finish that makes your walls pop, but imagine how the ceiling fan will look once your furniture and possessions are moved out of the home — as it will if you were to put your home on the market someday. Will the ceiling fan look out of place? If so, you may want to weigh whether it’s worth putting potential future buyers off.

On the other hand, you may not be planning to sell your home anytime soon, and it’s more important for  you to choose a fan that complements your personal style. A distinctive fan can still add to a home’s charm. Choose a fan style that matches your decorating style — whether modern, traditional, rustic, tropical or something else. Add interest to a unified decorating style with a fan in a contrasting style. If you have a more eclectic taste, you have more options — you don’t need to match your fan to your decorating style. Instead, think about how your fan’s color, design, and style complement your existing aesthetics.

Size the Fan Right

A fan that is too large or too small for the space it’s in will look out of place and won’t function correctly. Make sure you’re using the right size fan for your room. Ceiling fans are measured in inches according to the width of the blade span across the center of the fan. Match fan size to room size accordingly:

  • Up to 75 square feet: 29- to 36-inch fan
  • 76 to 144 square feet: 36- to 42-inch fan
  • 145 to 224 square feet: 44- to 50-inch fan
  • 225 to 400 square feet: 50- to 54-inch fan
  • 401 square feet or more: 60-inch or larger fan

When you take the time to choose the right fan for your home and decor, you’ll be choosing a new fixture that will add to your home’s appeal and comfort. Whether you continue to live in your home for decades or eventually sell, you won’t be sorry you chose to update your fan.

Reasons Why Hiring Electrician in Adelaide Is Better than DIY

Most homeowners in Adelaide, wanting not to waste money, do some DIY projects in their properties. That can be useful, especially if you are handy with the tools and have experience in home repairs. But what you should stay away from is power installations and anything that has a direct electrical connection. Unless you are an electrician by vocation.

With the help of the World Wide Web, you can do almost any DIY project you imagined. If you are willing to tackle electrical repairs, you can do some minor fixes. You can replace a bulb or fuse, install a smoke detector, or rewire some small appliance, but what about the major issues? All other failures should be left to certified professionals from roohome.

Vast Knowledge

It takes years of schooling to become an electrician in Adelaide. During this time, these tradies get knowledge of electronics and skills through practice. Also, they train to work cautiously and use safety equipment while working with electricity. No DIY tutorial can compare to that.

Over the years, electricians face a variety of situations and specific problems. It helps them gain a routine in diagnosing a fault and finding a solution to it. Years of learning and practice allow them to navigate through home electrical layout and appliance wirings. Even the keenest DIY-er cannot learn that by watching YouTube videos.

On the power grid, things are often not what they seem at first. The failure may be quite apparent, or it can be a sign of a much bigger problem. If you have a superficial knowledge of electronics, common sense will not let you guess what the problem is. You will call an electrician and leave this job to the experts’ hands.

In the case of obsolete installations, the risk of an accident is even higher. Experienced and reputable electricians are equally good with both old and new technology. They are improving their knowledge and skills and investing in modern tools.

No Damage Concern

By hiring a licensed electrician (check here how to find one), you are not only protecting yourself but also your property. Even the smallest mistake you make while trying to reconnect wires or repair a damaged cable can lead to a fire. That can destroy everything you have in a second. Improper handling of electrical wirings can cause significant material damage.

Damage may not only occur to property, but your shoddy work with electricity can worsen an existing fault. Only one wrong wire can turn off the electricity to the whole building. A clumsily connected cable can lead to a short circuit and explosion. The quick reaction of the electrician shortens the power supply downtime and drops any risk of improper handling.

If you decide to call an electrician after a failed DIY electrical repair, keep in mind that you will pay more than if you do that in the beginning. You might think that DIY skills would save you some money. Instead, shoddy or insufficient electrical repair actually does a lot more damage.

No Risk

Working with electricity is always a risk. Accidents happen to even the most skilled electricians, but much less frequently than DIY-ers. Apart from the fact that you do not have all the skills needed to work with electricity, you probably don’t have the appropriate equipment and knowledge of safety procedures. By doing any electrical repairs by yourself, you are endangering yourself, your family, and your property. Electricians also must follow safety and building codes, which you are not familiar with.

Professionals always give guarantees for their work, even if it is a minor intervention. The license they have forces them to do so. That document is of great importance to ensure your safety, but also to prevent new breakdowns and costs. Once the electrician gives you a written warranty, you can recall them anytime during the warranty period. They will fix any failure like the one they resolved.

Also, another obligation that license holders must fulfil is a mandatory insurance in case of injuries at the workplace. Working with electricity is one of the high-risk professions. Lack of insurance is a sign of irresponsibility, but also a red alarm that you do not hire such tradesmen.

If you or someone else had an accident while doing electrical repairs, you will be liable for the damage. The homeowner insurance policy usually covers this. But if you do not have insurance, you’ll pay everything out of your pocket.

Saving Time

Imagine the situation – you went to your beach house on vacation, and a power outage occurred. That can really ruin your mood. Your first thought is to detect and fix the fault yourself. Do you want to spend your holiday that way?

Like most people, you’d probably answer no to the previous question. So, it’s clear why you should call an experienced electrician in such a situation. While you might struggle to find the fault and the required tools, electricians have it all. Thanks to vast knowledge, they can detect the problem quickly.

With professional tools and safety gear, electricians will solve any fault on the electrical network much faster than you. They will also take care of safety and compliance with the law. After the repair, which will take a maximum of several hours, you can continue to enjoy your vacation.

Even if it’s a complex fault, any licensed electrician in Adelaide will fix it as soon as possible. Blackout can cause a lot of stress because the life of a modern man without electricity is practically impossible. But skilled tradesmen can handle both a failure and anxious homeowners.

Improper work with electricity can put you in real danger. It is logical that DIY repairs first come to mind when a failure on the power grid happens at the wrong time. But when you think of all the pros and cons of self-repair, you realize that hiring a professional is the smartest move.

How to Plan & Execute a Successful Room Makeover

Making over a room and looking forward to the prospect of a new and beautiful space is an exciting project to take up. In 2020 people spent more time than usual in their homes, and they got a chance to see what they don’t like about them, and what they wanted to change. This is why there was a huge surge in home improvement projects. In theory, a room makeover is as simple as buying new furniture, perhaps painting the walls, and laying new rugs, but any interior designer will tell you that there’s a lot more to it. That’s because successful redecorating has to be both creative and functional. We have to consider what the space looks like along with how we’ll live in it. So how do you make the process less stressful? By learning from how the professionals do it! If you can create a step-by-step process, you can keep the stress in check and end up with the result that matches what you had pictured in your head. Here are the steps to take when doing a room makeover.

The Mood

It’s important to know the goals you have for that room, not just in terms of functionally but also the mood of that room. The goals could be anything from making the space look more modern, or more warm in tone, more light and airy, making it look bigger, or you want to bring in elements of a specific style. Knowing this is very helpful because it starts giving you an idea of the kinds of colors, furniture items and decor elements you want to bring into it. Now according to the intention you have, you have an idea of the kinds of things to shop for and the decisions to make. If you want to go for something warm-toned, you know you’re going to be looking for reds, oranges and yellows. If you want to make the room more airy and light, you know you’re going to go for a change in window dressings, like a great set of blinds that let the light seep into the space. By knowing what feel you’re going for, you create a better process and make shopping for items less overwhelming.

Get Inspiration and Ideas

Gathering inspiration is an important step in a successful home improvement project. It’s really hard to know what you want to do if you don’t see something like it first. In this stage of the process, Pinterest is going to be your best friend. You can go on the app or website, type into the search the kind of style you’re going for and then start formulating the idea. If you’ve figured out the mood and feel you want in step 1 this is what you can type into your search. For example, “warm-toned living room” is a great place to start. You’ll be able to pull inspiration from other designs and start laying the groundwork.

Map Things Out

As you plan a room makeover, you’ll probably already have certain pieces in mind that you’ve seen online or in your favorite homeware store. It’s tempting to just buy everything you want and put it in place. This can be a recipe for disappointment if those things don’t go well together. First you have to remember that the size of your room dictates what will go into it and the last thing you want to do is end up with pieces that are too big or too small for your place, or a collection of pieces that aren’t proportional. Be sure to measure your space, and then the size of the items you want to buy. A good idea would be to draw in chalk on the floor the outline of the items you want in the exact size so you can see how the space of the room would be impacted.

Mock It Up

The next thing you need to do is find out if the things you bought actually work together visually. A simple trick you can do is downloading photos of the item from the online store, or taking photos of them, removing the background in a photo editing app like Canva and then arranging the photos on a plain Word document on your computer. This gives you more clarity on how things look, if there are any clashes and if you can substitute for something better. If you don’t have any experience, you can order real estate photo editing services to make your images more appealing to potential clients.

Once you’ve mapped everything out, and you’re happy with how it’s looking in a mock-up version, you can now go forth, buy the pieces and make the changes. Doing it with a plan makes it a lot easier to go from the idea you have in your head to a gorgeous finished product, and you’ll end up with something that truly matches your vision.

10 Factors to Consider When Downsizing Your Home

Whether you’re reaching retirement or looking to save money, there are a number of reasons why people decide to downsize.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the right financial or emotional choice for everyone.

We’ve rounded up the biggest factors to consider when downsizing from the benefits of increased cash flow and smaller utility bills to the risks that come with such a huge lifestyle change. Let’s look at the benefits first.

5 benefits to downsizing

Increased cash flow

One of the biggest reasons why a large number of people choose to downsize in later life is because it can prove a great opportunity to increase cash flow.

By paying for a smaller property out of the profits made on the sale of your previous home or by spending less on mortgage repayments, you’ll create the chance to save money. This could be a brilliant way to finally invest in a future project or treat the family.

Smaller utility bills

A smaller property is likely to cost less to upkeep whether you’re heating the living room in winter or keeping things cool in the summer months.

Again, you’ll have the freedom to choose where the money which would have usually been spent on utility bills goes whether you decide to save or invest.

You can enjoy retirement

From seemingly endless cleaning and maintenance indoors to taming the unruly garden every summer, running a large house can prove time-consuming.

Downsizing means you’ll have far less pressure, greater cash flow and more time on your hands.

Instead, you’ll finally be able to focus on spending time with loved ones, pursuing new hobbies and can just relax at home without the unnecessary stress.

More leisure time

Having a smaller space to clean and maintain means you can significantly cut down the time lost on household tasks. In turn, this may finally give you the opportunity to learn the skill you’ve always put off or to pursue the career goal you’ve always dreamt of.

Contribute to your Super

If you’re 65-years-old or older, you may be able to boost your superannuation by downsizing.

The government downsizer measure means that you can choose to make a contribution of up to $300,000 from the proceeds made selling your home. Now, let’s consider some of the potential negatives.

5 disadvantages to downsizing

It may not be the cheapest option

Although a large number of people choose to downsize, it isn’t necessarily the best financial decision for everyone.

Often you may need to perform renovations or quick repairs on your home before it’s ready to go on the market. Then, are the hidden fees involved with buying a new property such as legal costs, stamp duty and inspection fees.

Take into consideration your friends and family

If you’re used to living in a large home with a spare room (or two) then make sure to speak to your friends and family before downsizing.

If you don’t live in close distance to loved ones then it may prove difficult when it comes to hosting over the holidays or looking after the grandchildren. So perhaps consider moving to a smaller place within the same location. For instance, look for houses for sale in Carlingford.

Less space, less stuff

Remember that moving into a smaller space may mean that you have to sell, donate or throw out a large number of items that you have grown to love over the years.

Depending on how much you own, this may involve saying goodbye to sentimental books, furniture or ornaments.

A huge lifestyle change

Don’t underestimate the enormous lifestyle change that comes with downsizing.

If you’ve been living in the family home for many years, consider whether you’re ready to let go of the memories shared there.

If you’ve grown accustomed to a certain way of life, it’s important to also take into consideration factors that you love about your current home such as local amenities, transport facilities and the commute to work.

Do you need to downsize?

Remember not to get too caught up in the idea of downsizing, as it’s not the only option.

For instance, you may choose to rent out a room or to look into dual occupancy in order to save money. For those retiring, there’s also the option to move into a retirement village.

Not only is it an opportunity to meet like-minded people but it may even be a wiser financial decision with access to medical care, fitness classes, property management services and transport.

Downsizing is a huge lifestyle change. Some people may downsize when their children have moved out while others wait until retirement, everyone is different. Make sure to carefully weigh up the financial and emotional implications before looking for property management services.

How Exactly Bidets Offer A Healthier, Green Option for Your Bathroom

Bidets are a great way to improve your health and help the planet. If that last sentence shocked you, you’re not alone. That’s because most Americans don’t know very much about bidet technology.

Let’s start with what you do know: I think I heard a bunch of people talking about bidets at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic when no one could get TP because so many people were hoarding it. That’s right! Bidets saw a massive surge in sales in 2020 due to the pandemic because bidets are a terrific alternative to toilet paper. In fact, if you buy one, you might be able to stop using toilet paper. Forever! Let’s cover the bidet basics to get you up to speed.

What do bidets look like?

Most modern bidets are essentially fancy toilet seats that need to be plugged in. They look like regular toilet seats, though perhaps a bit sleeker, and they’re meant to be swapped out with your current toilet seat. They are taller in the back than your basic toilet seat because the back of the bidet seat is where all the technology is housed. Side note – you know how when you buy a toilet seat, you have to pay attention to details like “round” or “elongated?” It’s the same with bidets. You need to do your research to make sure the bidet model you’re interested in fits on your particular toilet bowl.

Okay, fine, bidets look like toilet seats, but how the heck do they work?!

Let’s simplify it as much as possible: you sit down and use the restroom. Then, instead of grabbing toilet paper when you’re finished, you press a button on your bidet. A nozzle will appear that sprays water at your genitals, and when you’re clean, the water stops. You either pat yourself dry with a few sheets of toilet paper, or if your bidet offers it, you press a second button for a warm air dry. It’s as easy as that.

Now, keep in mind that bidet technology has improved lightyears since bidets were first invented in the 1600’s. That means bidets like the Brondell Swash 1400 and other bidets have all sorts of options when you buy a bidet today.

  • Would you like a heated toilet seat?
  • A slow-closing automatic lid?
  • A nightlight?
  • A remote control that memorizes your preferred user settings?
  • Instantly heated warm water?
  • A strong wash or a gentle wash?
  • A warm-air dryer?
  • A built-in air deodorizer?
  • Self-cleaning stainless-steel nozzles?

These are just a sampling of the options available to you. Obviously, the rule for buying bidets is the more money you spend, the more luxurious options your bidet will offer. This is the case with the TOTO S550e bidet seat, which offers a large selection of options for it’s users. The most basic models spray cold water from your pipes at you. The highest-end models give you all the aforementioned bells and whistles and then some.

Got it. Bidets are a shower for my butt. Why is that healthier?

Okay, let’s talk about bacteria. Washing your rear end with water helps remove more fecal bacteria – which can then help prevent you from spreading that fecal bacteria to objects in your home or workplace, or to other people. Wait? Don’t people wash their hands after they wipe? Yes, they do, but it’s still possible for residual bacteria to make its way out into the world. That’s how restaurant employees can accidentally get loads of people sick. They wash their hands, but not well enough. However, this simply cannot happen if you use a bidet because your hands literally never come in contact with your waste.

Besides eliminating the hand/waste point of contact, bidets are better at washing away residual E.coli bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections in women and bacterial prostatitis in men. They also are more effective at keeping yourself clean, which in turn helps prevent colorectal issues for both men and women. Although bidet use hasn’t been studied at great length here in the U.S., one 2005 study at a nursing home showed residents’ urine bacteria declined after using them.

If all that information doesn’t convince you of the superior hygiene offered by bidets, consider this: if you were cleaning up dog poop and some accidentally got on your hands, would you pat it with dry paper and go on with your day? So why do you pat your anus with dry paper and consider it clean? Bidet washes offer much better hygiene, which is why most of the world uses them. In fact, the United States lags behind the rest of the civilized world on this front, and the reason that seems to be is because Americans are afraid or embarrassed to accept the truth that toilet paper wiping is just plain not as effective as water washing.

What about the environment? How do bidets help it?

You probably didn’t know that it takes about 384 trees to manufacture the average toilet paper used by one human in a lifetime. That’s a lot of trees to kill for a product that you literally flush down the toilet. And just think about the 8 billion people on the planet. If everyone used bidets, we’d be saving billions and billions of trees. We’d also be saving water. That probably sounds confusing because bidets use water. But it turns out manufacturing toilet paper uses more water. That’s because converting trees into paper that’s soft enough that we can use it on our genitals requires about 255 million gallons of water. Per day. So it’s easy to see that we save trees and water by using bidets. Trees and water are two important natural resources, so why not make a big impact on our planet simply by changing your bathroom behavior?

I get it – bidets are healthy and good for the environment. Anything else?

Yes! Most people who convert to using bidets wonder why they didn’t make the change a long time ago. Bidets are comfortable to use, and even better, they offer bathroom independence. So what? Just think if you injure your wrist, your arm, your shoulder, or your back – suddenly the prospect of going to the bathroom and wiping is a problem. But not if you have a bidet! You only need one finger to press a button and you can use the bathroom on your own. Likewise, if you have older people in your life, they will be able to use the restroom without your assistance thanks to a good quality bidet. People with hemorrhoids and anal fissures also report bidets help them heal quicker because they are not further injuring their anuses by wiping with abrasive paper.

All in all, you can’t go wrong by purchasing a bidet. And who knows, you just might love it so much that you’ll want to be like Italy and start mandating that every household get one!

Small Kitchen Ideas that Make the Most of Little Space

If you haven’t got a large space to work with, yet want to update and transform your kitchen, the whole process can seem frustrating. However, when you look at the positives, a small kitchen can be much cosier and bring a lot of charm.

In fact, believe it or not there are tonnes of tricks you can use to maximise the storage and efficiency of your small kitchen.

The key is to work with the space you have and it’s layout. No matter whether your kitchen is a single wall, u-shaped or a gallery.

To help you transform your small kitchen space, we have gathered some of our top tips below. No matter whether you’re renovating or starting completely afresh, you’ll want to read on and give them a try!

Add a Prep Area

If you don’t have the space to expand or add a full sized island to your home, think about adding a table that can double as both a prep area and dining spot. Even if this is a narrow console table, you can set down tools and ingredients here whilst you cook, so they don’t get in the way.

Add a Touch of Greenery

Plants can be a great way to liven up any space, including your kitchen!

Install a Floating Table

If you have an L-shaped kitchen that faces a blank wall, why not make use of all the space you have? Install floating shelves or a table to act as extra counter or dining space.

If you have a narrow space, you could even install a table that folds down so it can be flush with the wall whenever it isn’t needed.

Add a Kitchen Island

Even if your kitchen is narrow, you could even install a slim kitchen island or a rolling island that can be pushed out of the way once dinner is ready.

Use Light Colour To Visually Expand Your Small Kitchen

As a rule of thumb, think ‘the lighter the kitchen, the larger it can feel’. Keep working with a light colour palette on your countertops, backsplashes, walls and other such features to help make your small kitchen space feel a lot more open and spacious. Having white tiles can also help bounce light around and add to that spacious feel.

Distract the Eye with Bold Flooring

If you are working with a smaller kitchen space, going all-out with bold tiling can make a huge difference. A strong pattern will distract the eye from the actual size of the room and make it seem bigger.

Hide Your Appliances in a Breakfast Cupboard

Having lots of appliances such as your toaster, kettle and coffee machine out on your kitchen surfaces can make a space appear cluttered. So, why not add a breakfast cupboard and tuck them all away in there. Then, all you need to do in the morning is open the cupboard and your appliance is ready to use.

Turn Awkward Corners into Clever Storage

When working with a small kitchen, you are required to make use of every single nook and cranny for storage space. However, if you have a boxy kitchen, cramming all your pots and pans into a deep cupboard can become a nightmare very quickly when you need one from the back and find yourself clambering around. This is where you could consider swapping out this cupboard for a drawer, to maximise space further and make finding each pot and pan easy.

Choose Compact Appliances

Don’t be misinformed that small appliances mean cheaper quality. Many high-quality small appliances are available. You can also purchase combination appliances, such as microwave ovens that save lots of space.

Top Tip: Looking for high-quality compact kitchen appliances Stoke? Make sure to always buy them from a reputable stockist, such as Howards Appliances.

Of course, smaller kitchens can be a challenge to transform, but all it takes is some careful planning. Then, you’ll be able to maximise each piece of space you have to work with, without compromising on the key parts of your dream kitchen. With the above tips, see what you can create!
